Quick Reference Guide

This guide is for experienced Envato Tuts+ course instructors familiar with the Envato Tuts+ Instructor Guide and Style Guide. Always refer to the guides for complete details.

Set Up

Screencasting Settings

  • Size and resolution: 1280x720 or 1280x800.
  • Frame rate: either 24 or 25 frames per second for screencasts.
  • All elements on screen should be in English.
  • Record full screen.
  • Audio should be recorded in at -12dB (roughly 80-85%).

On-Camera Settings

  • Size and resolution: 1280x720 or 1280x800. You can shoot at 1920x1080 as long as you export at 1280x720 or 1280x800.
  • Frame rate: 30 fps.
  • Shutter speed should be roughly double the frame rate, so for 30 fps, 1/60.
  • Set white balance on the camera once the lighting is set.
  • On-camera audio:
    • Audio should be recorded in at -12dB (roughly 80-85%).
    • Sample rate: a minimum of 44.1 KHz.
    • Set the camera and audio recorder to record at the same sample rate and create a sync point by clapping.

Performance Tips

  • Relax and have fun. Smile while you record.
  • Do as many takes as you need.
  • Avoid “umms” and “ahhhs,” long pauses, awkward phrasing, and stumbles. If it does happen, keep recording, pause and begin the sentence again.
  • Introduce yourself at the beginning of each lesson, and end with a quick look at the next lesson.

Exporting

  • Review all videos while wearing headphones.
  • Add a slight fade in and fade out to the beginning and end of each lesson.
  • Export videos at 1280x720 or 1280x800 as .mp4 files with H.264 encoding.
